What is intention setting?
Intention setting is the act of doing something with purpose and thoughtful practice.
By setting an intention you are consciously directing your brain to work towards manifesting that change. Intentions bring purpose and direction to your actions by aligning the heart with the mind because you are focused on the changes you wish to make which helps to make them a reality.
Being intentional is a very important part of creating significant change in your life. This is particularly true when you want to break a bad habit or create a new one.
How to choose an intention
The intention you choose should be aligned with your personal value and belief system. It should come from the heart and be clear and specific in purpose. It may be a phrase or a single word that you can focus on and it should be positive rather than negative in direction.
Ask yourself some of the following questions:
- What makes you happy?
- What is important to you?
- What are you grateful for?
- What makes you feel proud?
- What would you like to do better in your life?
- What fears would you like to let go of?
- What behaviour would you like to change?
- What word would you like to align yourself with?
Examples of intentions are things like: “I will be more loving towards my partner”, “I will spend time enjoying nature every day”, “I will show my children how much I love them”, “I will eat food that nurtures and respects my body”, “peaceful”, “respectful”.
How to set intentions
There are many different ways to set intentions. The best method is always the one that works for you.
You may want to spend a few minutes thinking about your intention at the end of your morning meditation because this is when your head is most clear and focussed. Or you may prefer to use a journal to write down your intentions. Make notes about why you created the intention, what emotions you are feeling, what behaviours you want to change. The act of writing will assist in connecting your brain with the intention. Refer to it regularly to remind yourself.
It is important to think about your intention throughout the day. Find a way to remind yourself to think about it regularly. Many people like to use their mala beads to focus on their intention.
Stay with the same intention for a period of time. Change does not happen overnight but if you remain focussed you can make positive and dramatic changes to your life.
How to use mala beads for intention setting
When you set your intention hold your mala beads in your hands and silently or out loud verbalise your intention. As you wear your mala beads through the day you can touch them periodically as a reminder of your intention. The physical contact with the beads will serve as a tool to help you focus. If you are not able to wear your beads you can keep them in your pocket and touch them every now and again as your reminder.
